Chapter 10: The seasons by the shorter year
The same calculation, now by the more precise solar year of 365 days, 5 hours, 997 parts and 48 moments (365:5:997:48), under which the solar and lunar years come out exactly even over every nineteen-year cycle. The Rambam gives its interval between tekufos and its method, says this is the reckoning the court relied on when deciding leap years, and notes that both methods follow the sun's mean position rather than its true one.
1The solar year, according to those who say it is less than a quarter day: one of the Sages of Israel says it is 365 days, 5 hours, 997 parts and 48 moments (365:5:997:48).
A moment is one seventy-sixth of a part.
By this calculation, the solar year exceeds the lunar year by 10 days, 21 hours, 121 parts and 48 moments (10:21:121:48).
By this calculation there is no remainder at all in a nineteen-year cycle. In each cycle the solar years come out even with the lunar years, ordinary and leap together.
2By this calculation, the interval between one tekufah and the next is 91 days, 7 hours, 519 parts and 31 moments (91:7:519:31).
Once you know when one of the tekufos was, count this amount from that moment and you will know the tekufah after it, in the way we explained for the calculation in which the year has a full quarter day.
3By this calculation, the tekufah of Nisan in the first year of creation came 9 hours and 642 parts (0:9:642) before the molad of Nisan.
And so it always is in the first year of every cycle: the tekufah of Nisan comes 9 hours and 642 parts (0:9:642) before the molad of Nisan.
4Once you know the tekufah of Nisan of the first year of the cycle, count from it 91 days, 7 hours, 519 parts and 31 moments (91:7:519:31) for each tekufah, until the end of the cycle.
5If you want to know when the tekufah of Nisan will be by this calculation, first find how many complete years of the cycle have passed. Take the excess for each of those years, which is 10 days, 21 hours, 121 parts and 48 moments (10:21:121:48). Gather all the moments into parts, all the parts into hours, and all the hours into days, the same way you calculate the moladot. Subtract from the total 9 hours and 642 parts (0:9:642). Cast out what remains in lunar months. Add what is left, which does not amount to a lunar month, to the molad of Nisan of that year. The moment the count reaches is the tekufah of Nisan of that year.
6It seems to me that this was the tekufah calculation they relied on for making a leap year when the Great Court was in session, since they would add a month because of the season or because of need. For this calculation is more accurate than the first one, and it is closer to what has been established in astronomy than the first calculation, in which the solar year was 365 and a quarter days.
7Both of these tekufah calculations whose method we explained are only approximate. They follow the sun's mean motion, not its true position.
By the sun's true position, the tekufah of Nisan in our times falls about two days before the tekufos that come out of these calculations, whether by the calculation of a full quarter day or by the calculation of less than a quarter day.
